Is there another Earth out there?

Is there another Earth out there? Scientists say new space probes might find another Earthlike planet -- one that could support life -- in the next decade

Within 10 years, an Earth-size planet -- the size that scientists consider the most likely to contain oceans and therefore life -- is expected to turn up in searches by two scheduled NASA probes. Astronomers hope to be able to detect life, or rule it out, in such places within 20 years.

''We know for certain there are a hell of a lot of planets out there,'' easily 10 billion in our galaxy alone, says astronomer Steve Vogt of the UCO/Lick Observatory at the University of California-Santa Cruz. Current data suggest at least 12% of nearby stars have Jupiter-size planets, he says, and 3% might have Earth-size ones.

Finding solar systems like our own, where a Jupiter-size planet on a stately circular orbit screens smaller inner planets from space junk, is the focus of his team's efforts in the next five years.

''I expect we'll find many planets like Earth,'' says Louis Friedman, head of the Planetary Society, a space activism group based in Pasadena, Calif. Most likely, they will come as a series of scientific ''hints,'' he says, first a planet of the right size but the wrong orbit, then the right orbit but seemingly no atmosphere, and then one giving signs of a water-rich atmosphere like Earth's.

A number of planned space missions are aimed squarely at detecting Earth-size planets:

* Kepler. Named after Johannes Kepler, the 16th-century astronomer who divined the laws of orbital motion, this NASA mission in 2006 is expected to find about 30 Earth-size planets in Earthlike orbits. It will detect ''transits,'' the slight dimming of a star's light that occurs when a planet passes in front of it.

* Space Interferometry Mission (SIM). A NASA mission in 2009 expected to detect one or two Earthlike planets from a survey of 200 nearby stars. It will measure side-to-side gravitational wobbles that planets produce on their stars via gravitational pull.

* Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF). Scientists are still deciding what instruments to install in this NASA search for life in 2014 on an Earthlike planet. ''The goal is a picture of an Earthlike planet to run in every newspaper, above the fold,'' says Traub, a member of one TPF development team.

* Darwin. The European Space Agency plans to launch this flotilla of small telescopes in 2015. By combining the light from telescopes to make a powerful ''interferometer'' device, the mission should be capable of detecting chemical composition of atmospheres on Earthlike planets discovered by SIM or other missions.

Birmingham UFO Sighting

Birmingham - UK - Jun 5 2003 - UFO experts are investigating reports of strange lights seen in the sky over the city centre.

The respected investigators Contact International UFO Research (CIUFOR) are looking into the sightings over Broad Street last Saturday night.

A man in his 30s phoned the organisation after he was left 'disconcerted' by what he saw at around 11.20pm.

CIUFOR spokesman Michael Soper said: "The eye witness told us he saw two triangular shapes of white, bluish light moving from north east to south west west.

"He was surprised because there was no noise. They were moving completely silently. A third object joined them and together moved in a set square shape before one of the objects shot off vertically. The remaining lights then disappeared leaving a clear sky.

"The sighting lasted for a couple of minutes in total."

Searching for UFOs a life-long obsession

United Kingdon - Richard Cote, Lansdowne Five UFO Research Committee:

"I've basically devoted my life to finding out what I saw in 1977," he says.

"And I won't stop until I'm satisfied."

What did he see in 1977?

Cote was 17 years old. He says that one clear morning, his mother woke him up and told him to hurry outside. Hovering above the horizon, he says, was a glowing orange shape that splintered into smaller pieces, then re-assembled.

"It listened to my thoughts," says Cote.

"Because I said, 'I wonder how fast that thing can go?' And it just went -- fooosh -- straight up, so fast. And then I said, 'I hope it comes back.' And it came back."

Cote says he and his mother watched the objects for about 15 minutes.

"I knew that it was going (away)," he says.

"And I felt so close to it -- I don't know why, I can't explain why to you. It was so personal. When I got the sense that it was leaving, I felt like I'd lost my parents. I felt like I lost something I was truly attached to for a long, long time."

As he says this, Cote appears close to tears.

"It left me a thought that I'll never forget," he says.

"I'll die with that message it left in my head."

What was the message?

"I said, 'Will I ever see you again?' " says Cote.

"And it said, 'One day, we're all going to be reunited into one.' That's the thought it left. And then it tilted nicely (away), like a gentle tilt. It was so beautiful.

"Until they tell me what I saw in 1977, I won't stop (searching)," says Cote.

"This is something I'm going to die with."

NZ's image a little greener than thought

New Zealand - "Alien Investigations" - TV3 - Chris Templer works as a guide at the Waitomo Caves. He is also a UFO investigator. Several years ago, while walking along the sandhills at Kawhia, Chris says he was confronted by two aliens, who then communicated with him. They gave him a series of co-ordinates, which, when plotted on a map, pointed towards Kawhia.

Once a sceptic, "the last thing that I was expecting to see was a couple of damned aliens". Chris now believes that aliens travel up and down the country on a series of "spiritual energy track lines" - - lines that converge at places such as Kawhia, hence the number of sightings in that area. Chris calls Kawhia a "UFO hotspot" and just last year a local family captured a light show on videotape which would appear to fall into that unidentifiable 10 per cent.

One of the most famous UFO sightings was recorded over Kaikoura in 1978. Known as the Kaikoura Lights, Air Force Warrant Officer Ian Uffindel, describes seeing three lights, one large and two small, the latter positioned on either side of the larger object and an equal distance apart. Uffindel thinks that the lights were a search party, based on a reported sighting and subsequent disappearance over Port Underwood, two nights earlier.

Uffindel watched the lights for more than an hour and says that every now and then the smaller lights would send out a beam at roughly a 45-degree angle. Could they have been searchlights?

The encounter was even closer for the crew of an Argosy freight plane -- the lights tracked the craft and, according to John Cordy of Wellington Air Traffic Control, "the atmosphere was so exciting (that) if the Argosy had said, `this thing's big, it's metallic, it's just opened a door and we're going in', we'd have just said `fine'." Public interest was such that the Government ordered an inquiry but its findings were less than conclusive.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

UFO researcher George Filer said the number of sightings has remained fairly consistent for the last few months, but May had some of the most unusual encounters.

For instance, folks in Winnebago, Wis., reported seeing what looked like three flying Spaghettios hovering over Lake Winnebago on May 15 and May 20 and a trio of flying green cigars was spotted running amuck around Northridge, Calif., on May 7.

Still, the most bizarre UFO sighting occurred in rural Ohio, where a group of 30 stick figures, each about 3-feet tall, broke up a wild party.

Filer admits these cases sound almost unbelievable but that won't sway him from doing further research because, in his words, "the strange ones are more likely to be true."

UFO research at Grampians

UFO sightings around the Grampians National Park will be the subject of a new documentary.

A group of investigators from the Victorian section of the Australian UFO Research Network will compile the footage with the aim of attracting an international TV market.

The members plan to spend as long as six nights during June staking out sites in the Grampians.

Spokesman Jason Groves, of Warrnambool, said that during the past three years there had been many reports of strange lights from in and around the Grampians.

The 10 members of the Warrnambool and Melbourne units will focus their cameras on the Lake Wartook area.

The group hopes to market the documentary to European television stations and will also seek to publicise their findings on Australian TV. "What we need at this point is to find more people who may have seen the lights but have not reported them," Mr Groves said.

UFO’s Found to Be Active over the Caspian Sea

02/06/2003 - Baku - The head of the space seismology sector and member-correspondent of International energy-informational academy for the UN, Fuad Gasimov, commented on this recently in a local newspaper. Mr. Gasimov confirmed the fact, that the flying object that appeared in the sky on May 19 was truly an apparatus from another planet. “This fact is not surprising. For a long period of time, all facts about UFO’s were being denied,” he said. “As usual, they were denied at the authoritative level, by famous scientists, who, by the way, were not scientists in fields relating ufology.”

“Today it’s not a secret that the USA and other countries have special hangars, where they keep downed UFOs. Americans using modern technology, now have unique knowledge and are keeping it secret,” Mr. Gasimov says. UFO specialists suggest that Azerbaijan create special hangars and begin research on our own.

“Currently, it is known that there are three alien bases on Azerbaijan territory,” Mr. Gasimov continues. It is also known that in 1999 a UFO fell in the Caspian Sea. At that time, Iran, Russia and the U.S. were arguing over who would get the remains of the object for research purposes. In the end, the alien ship was transferred to Russia.

“This happened because Azerbaijan didn’t have the resources to hide the ship,” he said.

Question is, what do the UFOs look like and from what are they made? Fuad Gasimov responded that the shapes and sizes vary from tiny to 300 km in length. Usually such giant ships are called “mother ships”, inside of which you can find a number of smaller multi-functional flying devices. The material is kept secret. It’s impossible for an ordinary man to get into the alien bases, because of the powerful gravitational fields surrounding them. A UFO, based of the bottom of the Caspian Sea, is “charging” from its tectonic structure. UFOs have the ability to teleport- to disappear in the moment of need.

“That’s why the residents of Baku thought that after hanging in the air for the two hours, the UFO went back into space,” Mr. Gasimov said. “In reality, due to their hyper-speed capabilities, teleportation took place.” The aliens can attain speeds exceeding that of the speed of light and can cover distances of hundreds of light years in a few days. After Fuad Gasimov reported that bodies of aliens were found in the ship, the obvious next question was – what do they look like?

Gasimov said that a few species were found. For example, some aliens were short, with extended vast eyes, and were dressed in silver-colored suits. Other types of aliens were also discovered. They resemble Anglo-Saxons- tall, with light eyes and hair.

Also Gasimov said that worldwide, up to 1 million people are kidnapped annually. In Azerbaijan alone, the number of people kidnapped is 184. Their names and the places from which they were kidnapped are known. Why are they kidnapping earthlings? Mr. Gasimov thinks that they are researching …it is only known that all of the people kidnapped are younger than 35.
