Sci Fi Channel puts its corporate muscle behind effort to investigate UFOs

NEW YORK - In an unusual step for a television network, the Sci Fi Channel is campaigning to persuade the government to be more forthcoming and aggressive in investigating UFO sightings.

Sci Fi has hired former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta as a Washington lobbyist, sponsored a symposium on interstellar travel and is considering a court effort to declassify documents related to a 1965 incident in Pennsylvania.

The network will premiere a documentary, "Out of the Blue," Tuesday at 9 p.m. (Eastern and Pacific time zones) that methodically lays out an argument that there's something out there.

"Our main goal is not to find a UFO," Vitale said. "The goal is finding the truth. We're expanding and exploring the blurry line between what is science fiction and what is science fact."

Vitale wouldn't say how much Sci Fi is spending on this. The network sponsored an archaeological excavation at Roswell, will debut a public service announcement Tuesday and has four new UFO specials in the works.

It is backing an effort to get U.S. Air Force records released on a 1965 incident in Kecksburg, Pa., where some witnesses believe a UFO crashed. This may end up in court, Rothschild said.

Group's UFO theory over earthquake

Dudley - UK - A group which researches sightings of UFOs believes there may be a link to the Dudley earthquake last autumn.

Stourbridge-based UFO Research West Midlands today warned there could be a repeat of the earthquake at the end of July.

The warning follows research into a reported UFO sighting at the epicentre of the earthquake, recorded at 5.0 on the Richter Scale on September 23 last year, in Brick Kiln Lane, Gornal, two months before.

Uform member Peter Kimberley said Wombourne resident David Rose contacted the group after he photographed a strange object in the sky near Wombourne last July.

And a photo he took of buzzards at Kingswinford Railway in March had a mysterious rod-like object in the foreground.

"We are now intrigued to see if anything happens around the latter end of July," said Mr Kimberley.

Open minds, flying saucers

The new Portland Alien Museum charts a middle course between frivolous and studious. There's a study library for serious ufologists and a 3-D Thrill Ride and gift shop for the rest of us, one well-stocked with flying-saucer key chains and galactic-locator dogtags.

This range is emblematic of the museum itself, says co-founder Lawrence Johns.

"We want to entertain, but at the same time, there's a serious side to the study of ufology and a lot of questions to be answered," he says. "We're listed with the Portland Oregon Visitors Association, so if people are in town with a convention or on vacation and they want some place to go, the museum is perfect, especially because it's so kid-friendly.

"But we want to provide common ground for all the niches of ufology, too -- people specialize in Roswell or the military or the New Age aspect or whatever. We're looking to be the common ground. What's really encouraging is the support we're getting already -- for instance, we opened the mail today and there were these tapes from a Canadian ufologist of the '50s about an incident that I've never heard anything about."

The open book shelves are filled with the more serious side of the matter, including a thick blue vinyl binder labeled "MUFON Field Investigator's Guide" from the Mutual UFO Network. There are stacks of the MUFON UFO Journal, four copies of "Disclosure," "Communion," "Flying Saucer Occupants," "Behind the Flying Saucer Mystery" and videos such as "The Disclosure Project Briefing Document" and "The Secret KGB UFO Files," which is playing on the TV set near the display case of "Star Trek" spaceships and two beautifully made prop pistols.

"Integration is the toughest part," said Clyde Lewis, who spoke at the opening. He's a Portland investigator whose "Ground Zero" radio program airs on KOTK on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. "We definitely have a fun side, but look around -- there's a serious side too. That's what great about this place," Lewis said of the museum. "This is a place where people can study and make up their minds based on the evidence."

Lewis said that the majority of Americans believe that UFOs exist, Hollywood makes millions of dollars by making movies about aliens, and UFOs are an entrenched part of our pop culture and have been for a half century now. "Do UFOs exist? That's not even a question any more.

"But it may be that believing in aliens is our way of mixing religion and science. We should be ready to embrace the mystery because reality is too finite a term for an infinite universe."

FBI posts the real "X files"

The truth, it seems, is out there. And it can be found where special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully might never look--on the FBI's own Web site.

The agency has been quietly posting documents on the Net about reported unidentified flying objects, alleged alien abductions, and unexplained animal mutilations. More than 1,600 pages dating back to the 1940s are now public on the site, although most contain blacked-out passages and missing names.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) files may not reveal all there is to know about the possibility of life on other planets, but they give true believers--and even skeptics--a peek at the government's investigations into decades of mysterious sightings.

Included in the batch are random reports, such as a September 19, 1947 memo to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover regarding "flying discs" near Seattle, Washington. "[A man] sighted a silver object streaking across the sky," the memo states. "It was observed by these three people while they drove from 20 to 30 miles. All three people saw it, they decided they must be 'seeing things.'"

There also is only one document about the infamous craft that reportedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. A July 1947 memo to the FBI office in Cincinnati about the craft states, "The object resembles a high-altitude weather balloon with a radar reflector…Disc and balloon being transported to Wright Field by special place examination…National interest in case…National Broadcasting Company, Associated Press, and others attempting to break story of location of disc today."

On the site there are 12 pages from "Project Blue Book," the Air Force program to investigate UFOs, which was shut down in 1969 on grounds that "there has been no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as 'unidentified' are extraterrestrial."

Some say the FOIA documents actually discount the Air Force's assertion in Project Blue Book.

"The Air Force got out of the UFO reporting and investigating business, publicly at least, in 1969. [The] FOIA documents disprove their contentions that they lost interest in UFOs," said Jeff Westover, who is compiling UFO reports in Michigan.

Even with the online release of the FBI documents, it's hard to find a lot of information about UFO sightings or extraterrestrial life without the work of nongovernmental groups, he said.

Still, Andrus of the Mutual UFO Network suggested that the FBI's Web site itself could be part of a bigger government conspiracy.

"The U.S. government has lied for over 50 years about UFOs and now no one wants to be put in the position to admit that," Andrus said. "So they have elected to leak the information out gradually. This latest FBI release is just part of that tactic."

The Truth is Out There in Baku

Baku - Azeri - On 20 May, hundreds of residents of the Azeri capital of Baku say they witnessed an unidentified flying object hovering some 2.5 miles over the city, the Baku daily Ekho reported. Witnesses said they watched the UFO for two hours, describing it as having a “complicated and prolonged shape.” The UFO’s visit to Baku was taped by experts from the Scientific Research Institute for Predicting and Studying Earthquakes, and the commission’s head confirmed that the object was of a “technical origin,” but could not be identified as an airplane, helicopter, or any other known flying device. “The object was not moving fast enough to be considered part of a spacecraft. And the quality of the tape is clear enough to show that it wasn’t an atmospheric phenomenon,” the commission head was quoted as saying.

Low 'UFO' activity in Hessdalen

Hessdalen - Norway's most renowned spot for mysterious aerial sightings, the village of Hessdalen in South Troendelag, is experiencing a dearth of sightings. The valley community's measuring station has registered 120-130 unidentifiable light phenomena since 1998, but only one in the past year, newspaper VG reports.

Project Hessdalen began in 1983 and is managed by Oestfold University College. The project introduced sophisticated monitoring equipment in 1998 and posts incoming data on a web site devoted to the investigation.

Project leader Erling Strand told VG's web site that not only have the mechanical sightings dwindled recently, but also the observations made by the local populace.

Project Hessdalen has attracted international interest, including a group of scientists working at Italy's Institute for Radio Astronomy who study the Hessdalen phenomena.

Fractal Crop Formation in Knobel, Arkansas

Knobel, Arkansas - June 13, 2003 - Long shadows were pointing across crop fields late Saturday afternoon, June 7, when Bruce Catt and his daughter, Caleigh, were flying over farmer Todd Young's 150-acre wheat field. Caleigh had a camera and took four photographs of ten circles crisply laid down in clockwise swirls amid the standing wheat. It is a fractal pattern similar to one in Canada a couple of years ago.

MYSTERY IN SABAUDIA, "SIGNS" FOUND IN WHEAT FIELD

Sabaudia - Latina - Italy - June 16 2003 - A few days ago they appeared in the farmlands between the lake and the sea in Sabaudia: a huge design in nature formed from concentric circles and lines created from wheat flattened to the ground. The wheat fields are all around them. The owner of the property, Giovanni Cenci, noticed the strange phenomenon a few days ago. "I thought it was a joke," he said, "but then I saw the perfection of the lines and I was amazed. no-one could have reached the centre of the wheat field without leaving footprints. But there were none in my field. Now the news has got around and many people have come to see it". The farmer's son has also taken pictures of the marks with the help of a friend. The had to climb up on a light pole. "I don't what to think of it," said Cenci, "but it won't last very long. In a few days it will go back to normal".

Aliens stopped Chernobyl meltdown

Chernobyl - Russia - ALIENS saved most of Europe when the Chernobyl nuclear power station exploded. The blast at the plant was a caused by overheated steam, reports Russian newspaper Pravda.

But if it hadn't been for alien help it could have been a full nuclear explosion. The reactor's lid was blown off in the 1986 blast but the damage could have been much worse, Pravda claims.

Witnesses are claiming a UFO somehow helped prevent widespread catastrophe. Hundreds of people said they saw a spaceship hovering above the Ukraine plant.

Chernobyl worker Mikhail Varitsky said he went to the site on the evening of the blast and saw a huge fireball. "We saw two rays of crimson light stretching towards the power- generating unit. The object was about 300m from the reactor," he said. "The lights of the object went out and it flew away in a north- westerly direction." He said the UFO lowered the radiation level by about a quarter, which probably prevented a nuclear blast.

But that was not the last time the aliens were spotted at the site. On September 16, 1989, the same power generating unit emitted more radiation into the atmosphere. Hours later, a doctor saw an object glowing in the sky above the nuclear power plant. Dr Irina Gospin said amber light came from the spaceship.

Thirteen months later reporter Vladimir Navran was photographing the plant's machine shop. "When I developed the film it showed clearly an object hovering above the roof," he said.

Thirty people people died at Chernobyl in 1986 and hundreds more have been affected by radiation.
