Alien Lovers: Documentary explores human side of meetings from beyond
Karin, an attractive woman in her late 20s with short-cropped hair and a quick smile, is fairly certain that her first experience with extraterrestrial beings came when she was just two and a half. Playing with a new gumball machine in a dry creek bed outside of her Florida home, Karin remembers a small being with large, black eyes coming out from behind a tree. He asked her to accompany him; she did. She remembers that they entered an "egg-shaped" vehicle.
The being introduced her to a boy slightly older than she and asked if she would share her gumball machine with him. She did. The next thing she knew, she was "mid-frame, running towards the house." She and her mother hunted all around the creek bed for that gumball machine. They never found it, though over 20 years later, Karin found the young boy whom she believes was in the egg-shaped vehicle with her, now a man living in his native Scotland.
As an adult, Karin has frequently been awakened by an intense feeling of electric current coursing through her slim frame. She's seen an eerie blue light, an unnatural screaming hue, repeatedly illuminate her bedroom windows. She's been aroused from deep slumber only to find herself completely unable to move. She is certain that her ovaries have been pierced, eggs removed. She believes that she's met her half-alien children, small "young beings" who are also tinged an uncanny blue. She cries as she says this. She appears to be perfectly sane.
Karin is one of the estimated hundreds of thousands of people who claim to have experienced alien abduction. As featured in filmmaker Laurel Chiten's latest documentary, Touched, Karin is just one of a handful willing to tell her story. Startled by such remarkable tales, most of us tend to scoff at them. When a Harvard professor of psychiatry gravely researches them as being true, opinions sometimes change.
Dr. John E. Mack is one such psychiatrist. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of a biography on T. E. Lawrence, Mack has devoted the last decade to working with subjects who believe that they have been abducted, writing about them (resulting in at least two nonfiction works, Abduction and Passport to the Cosmos) and defending himself for his research against colleagues at Harvard, who launched a two-year investigation of his work before finally exonerating him as worthy of his tenure.
Mack invited Chiten, whose work he was familiar with from her earlier documentaries (Twitch and Shout, about Tourette's syndrome, and The Jew in the Lotus, an autobiographical study), to make a film about his patients and their experiences. She resisted until he dangled a free meal. Arriving for a dinner in honor of Mack's clients, many of whom spoke at eloquent length of their experiences, Chiten became struck by the simple force of each person's humanity. These weren't raving lunatics, but rather ordinary people whose lives had unwillingly, it seems, been irrevocably changed.
Touched focuses primarily on Karin and another alleged abductee named Peter, who believes that he was used as a sperm resource while in his 20s for alien half-breed production. Peter, a handsome man who trains as an acupuncturist during the course of the film, is married to the long-suffering Jamy, a therapist.
Remaining skeptical, Chiten trained her lens on the human aspect of this underground drama. "I am someone who is completely outside the experience," she says. "Jamy is me; she's the audience. I think that the major thing that I wanted people to walk away from the film with is that it is purposefully ambivalent [about the subject of alien visitation], because I am. I'm agnostic about it. It's real; it's not real. I believe them; I don't believe them. You're never quite sure. But it's not really just about alien abduction per se; it's about the human drama, what happens when something comes into your life."
Perhaps most brilliantly, Chiten interviews thinkers outside of Mack's field, speaking to the Vatican's own demonologist and to a myth and folklore expert whose specific discipline is daimonology. Speaking in Italian through an interpreter, the Vatican priest reveals that the Catholic Church is heartily ready to embrace the idea of alien visitation. Explaining that the fallible art of human narrative forms the basis of our shared history and certainly of the Christ tale itself, the elderly priest leans forward in his chair and says, "Who are we to believe that we are the only life in the universe? It's stupid," his voice trailing the translator: "stupido."
As Mack patiently explains earlier in Touched, Westerners have the only culture in the world that doesn't readily accept the duality of an alternative existence to the human one.
"There might be 100 people who have a psychological explanation; there might be 12 people who have a neurological explanation; there might be hundreds of people who have sleep paralysis--but that still," she says, her voice rising slightly, "doesn't explain all the rest of the people who have experienced this."

More than 30 years on - is this Darwin's greatest UFO mystery?
In 1972, Rodney Jarvis saw a UFO at 5am over Darwin airport with 3 other gentlemen. After 31 years he would like to make contact again with the other witnesses. Two were security guards from Darwin airport, the other was 'Fred' whose father was the caretaker at the Darwin German Club.
He realises the chances of contacting the other witnesses are slim.
"After more than 30 years, ever since I witnessed this UFO I guess every single week I've thought about it and I just thought well I'll give it a shot, perhaps out of the three other witnesses, one of them or someone who knows one of them might like to contact me just so we can compare our recollections of what actually happened," he said.
Rodney says he was at Darwin airport on that fateful night, sleeping in the car because he was waiting to catch an early flight and at 4.45 in the morning he woke up and looked out the window.
"I saw a very large orange light moving very slowly just above the tops of the houses that I could see in silhouette and as I was watching it the first thing I thought of was a helicopter.
"As it moved across to the left it immediately stopped and reversed back in the opposite direction and I thought well, a helicopter can't manouvre that quickly," he says.
That's when Rodney decided to wake his mate Fred, to show him what was happening.
"He was not sure what it was, we both got out of the car and he was absolutely terrified of it right from the start and as we watched it it continued to zigzag towards us," says Rodney.
"As it came over us it was climbing in altitude and as it passed over the top of us I put my hand in through the open window and flashed the car lights once, and it stopped, immediately above us."
Rodney says he felt then that this was a chance not in a lifetime but in two or three hundred lifetimes to see something like this and he wanted desperately whoever or whatever it was.
"Fred had the opposite reaction, when it stopped, he ran in panic and hid underneath the eaves of a building and he was screaming out get out of there you maniac, you don't know what that is get away.
"And I was thinking I just want to contact this craft or UFO or whatever it was".
AFter about 15 minutes, Rodney says two airport security guards came over to find out why they were flashing car lights at five in the morning, and he says they witnessed the UFO heading straight into the air and over the horizon.

UFO rams the Andes
Peruvian scientists are puzzled by the actual causes of a powerful earthquake in one of distant regions of the country.
Supposedly, the quake was caused by an unidentified bright object. Head of the department of Geophysical Institute Arekipa Armando Minaya confirmed the assumption.
A powerful quake (3,5 on the Richter's scale) has been reported within 1000 kilometers south of Lima on Monday, February 2. Local peasants informed the Institute of a "bright object" collapsing to the ground. Witnesses claim they heard major explosion and noticed smoke.
A team of scientists has been sent to the place of the mysterious crash. Scientists in turn claim that it might have been a gigantic meteorite, since no signs of an earthquake have been reported in the South American country in the past few days.

Vancouver tops in reported UFO sightings across Canada
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Vancouver and Toronto topped the list of Canadian cities with sightings of unidentified flying objects, according to an annual report.
According to the 2003 Canadian UFO Survey released Tuesday by Ufology Research of Manitoba, there were 673 UFO sightings across Canada last year, 39 percent more than in 2002. Of the sightings reported last year, 41 were in Vancouver and 34 in Toronto.
"It's still puzzling why we're seeing an increase," survey author Chris Rutkowski said. "It could be that more people are willing to admit they've seen a UFO because they see other people admitting it. The ridicule barrier is almost completely eliminated."
Of the total sightings, 17 percent remain unexplained.

UFOs call town home
THE tiny town of Beveridge, north of Melbourne, is fast earning a reputation as Australia's UFO hot spot.
Since Whittlesea Council released a photograph purportedly showing a UFO, other locals have come forward claiming to have seen flying objects.
Kilmore resident Peter Christie said he was taking his daughter, Elise, to a friend's house about 10pm on Saturday, January 10, when he noticed something flying in the west.
"I saw this round thing in the sky with lights coming out of it," she said. "It was sort of moving. It wasn't going very fast or anything.
"It had big, round lights coming out of it, it was too wide to be a plane . . . and it was nothing like a helicopter."
She said there were several lights beaming outwards from the side of the object, parallel to the ground.
"We both said, 'no, that's definitely not a plane'," she said, adding that the object was in view for several minutes.
"We were going over a hill and there was one stage when we couldn't see anything. Then it appeared again. I wasn't scared. I was a bit shocked."
Mr Christie, who was driving, managed a few short glances at the object but agreed it was definitely not a plane.
"We didn't know what it was . . . and then we heard the news the other day," he said.
Elise said several people had greeted her comments about the sighting with scepticism. So she stopped talking of it until Whittlesea Council's photograph, with a disc-shaped object in the sky, was widely publicised late last month.
The release of Whittlesea Council's UFO photo sparked much interest and the council's website recorded more than 37,000 hits over three days.
Council traffic engineer Roland Rozario, who took the photo, was interviewed reporters from across the globe and websites reprinted his photograph.
